Learning Swedish
English gets you in. Swedish gets you home. The free courses, the apps, and the art of stopping Swedes from switching languages on you.
You can land a job, sign a lease and live a full Stockholm year in English — Swedes' English is famously excellent. Which is exactly the trap: comfort makes the language easy to postpone, and the country opens a level deeper in Swedish.
Do you actually need it?
For tech, research and international companies: not on day one. For healthcare professions, the public sector and most customer-facing work: yes, often formally. For friendships, parent groups, jokes and the feeling of belonging: eventually, absolutely. Plan for it on your own schedule — before circumstances plan it for you.
The free route: SFI
Quality varies by municipality and pace can feel slow for fast learners — but the price is zero and it counts as evidence of integration for permits. Sign up the week your personnummer arrives.
Faster and parallel routes
Evening courses at Folkuniversitetet or ABF push harder for a fee. Apps cover the gaps: Duolingo for habit, SVT Språkplay for subtitled real television, Lingio for work vocabulary. Libraries run free språkcafé evenings — conversation practice with patient volunteers and free coffee.
The switch-to-English problem
You'll attempt Swedish; they'll answer in flawless English, meaning it kindly. The counter-spell is one sentence: "Jag vill gärna öva min svenska — kan vi ta det på svenska?" ("I'd like to practice my Swedish — can we do this in Swedish?") Swedes respect a stated preference completely. You will have to say it many times. Say it anyway.
Realistic milestones
Three months of steady effort: survival Swedish — shops, small talk, signs. One year: fika-fluent, following most conversation. Two to three years: working professionally in Swedish. Faster is possible; slower is normal; zero is the only failure mode.
Common questions
Is SFI really free?
Yes — for anyone registered in Sweden with a personnummer. Your kommun runs or contracts it; sign up through their website.
How long until I'm fluent?
For English speakers, Swedish is among the easiest major languages — the US Foreign Service estimates ~600 class hours to professional working proficiency. Real-world translation: one to three years depending on intensity.
Is Swedish required for citizenship?
A language requirement for citizenship and permanent residency is being phased in — check Migrationsverket for the current rules that apply to your timeline.
