Moving with kids
Förskola from age one, school lunches by law, and a system that quietly assumes both parents work. The family logistics, decoded.
Sweden may be the easiest rich country in the world to raise children in — not because anything is luxurious, but because the system assumes children exist and builds everything around that fact.
The short version
Förskola: the first institution
Apply through your kommun's e-service; the municipality must offer a place within about four months, so join the queue the week your personnummer arrives. Expect a culture shock in the best sense: enormous amounts of outdoor time in all weather ("there's no bad weather, only bad clothes" is policy, not a saying), and an introduction period — inskolning — where a parent attends alongside for one to two weeks.
The school years
Förskoleklass at six eases kids in; grundskola runs to sixteen; gymnasiet (upper secondary, also free) follows. Grades start in year 6. Fritids — after-school care at school, small fee — bridges the gap between the school day and working hours, because the system assumes you have a job, not a chauffeur schedule.
Choosing a school
The skolval (school choice) system lets you rank municipal and friskolor (publicly funded independent schools — also free) alike. International and English-language schools exist in the big cities; some are free friskolor, some charge fees. Non-Swedish-speaking kids get real support: introduction classes and the right to modersmål — mother-tongue instruction in their home language.
The safety net underneath
VAB — paid leave to care for a sick child — is a legal right used without guilt or doctor's notes for short illnesses. Healthcare for kids is essentially free, dental included through 19, and BVC (the child health centres) handle checkups and vaccinations from day one.
Common questions
How much does childcare cost in Sweden?
Förskola is capped at 1,547 SEK/month for the first child from July 2026 (slightly less for siblings), full-time, regardless of your income. School from age six is entirely free.
My child doesn't speak Swedish — will they manage?
Yes, and faster than you. Schools run introduction classes for newly arrived kids, plus mother-tongue instruction. Children are typically conversational within months.
When should I apply for förskola?
The week you get your personnummer. The kommun guarantees a place within about four months of application — popular individual preschools have longer queues, so list several.
