Moving to Sweden from the UK
Brexit moved Britain to the non-EU queue — but the UK kept a few privileges, your license still swaps, and the cultural distance is smaller than the paperwork suggests. The post-2021 route, honestly mapped.
Your starting position
Non-EU since Brexit: free movement is gone — a permit comes before the ferry.
The route in
Post-Brexit, Brits follow the standard third-country path: a work permit on a Swedish job offer of at least 33,390 SEK/month (June 2026 threshold), studies, the sambo route, or self-employment. The good news: English-speaking professionals remain in demand in tech, gaming, finance and engineering, and the time zones, flight times (2 hours) and work culture make this the gentlest non-EU move there is.
What will actually surprise you
- Your license still swaps
- The UK kept its place on Sweden's exchange list post-Brexit: a British license converts to a Swedish one without retesting. One of the few Brexit clauses that went your way.
- No NHS, but you won't miss the GP queue
- The region-run system rhymes with the NHS — vårdcentral ≈ GP surgery, 1177 ≈ NHS 111 — but with small per-visit fees capped at 1,450 SEK/year, and notably faster digital access.
- Renting is a different sport
- No Rightmove equivalent with endless stock: first-hand contracts queue for years, so newcomers rent second-hand via Qasa and Blocket. Deposits are modest by London standards — the scarcity is the cost.
- The pub is a kitchen now
- Bar rounds at 85 SEK a pint recalibrate habits fast: Swedes pre-game at home (förfest), buy at Systembolaget before Saturday 3pm, and socialize over fika as much as over beer. Your liver will file no complaints.
Money, quickly
1 GBP ≈ 12.7 SEK (mid-2026, indicative). A 45,000 SEK salary is ≈ £3,550/month gross. Pensions: UK workplace pensions stay put and can be claimed from abroad; Swedish tjänstepension starts stacking on top from day one.
Driving
Exchange the UK license at Transportstyrelsen within its validity — no tests required. Remember: right-hand traffic, winter tyres 1 Dec–31 Mar, and headlights always on.
Taxes across the border
The UK–Sweden treaty prevents double taxation; once tax-resident here, worldwide income is declared in Sweden with credit for UK tax. ISAs lose their wrapper status in Swedish eyes — the local ISK is the replacement habit.
Common questions
Can British citizens still move to Sweden after Brexit?
Yes, but through the non-EU door: a work permit with a job offer of at least 33,390 SEK/month (from June 2026), studies, family ties or self-employment. The pre-2021 freedom of movement is gone; those who registered residence before Brexit keep withdrawal-agreement rights.
Can I use my UK driving licence in Sweden?
Yes — and better: the UK is on Sweden's exchange list, so you can swap it for a Swedish license without taking any tests. Do it once you're registered as a resident.
Is Sweden more expensive than the UK?
Against London, no — rent is the great equalizer in Sweden's favor. Against the rest of the UK, groceries and eating out run higher, while childcare (capped ~1,550 SEK/month), healthcare and transport run dramatically lower. Net disposable income usually compares well.
