Moving to Sweden from India
Indians are among Sweden's largest work-permit groups — the IT corridor between Bengaluru and Stockholm is real infrastructure by now. The route, the paperwork, the winters, and what nobody warns you about.
Your starting position
Non-EU: work permit before travel — usually arranged by the employer, often a transfer.
The route in
Most arrivals come on employer-driven work permits — Swedish tech, telecom and consulting firms recruit heavily from India, and intra-company transfers (ICT permits) move whole teams. The offer must pay at least 33,390 SEK/month from June 2026. Master's programs are the second big door: Swedish universities court Indian students, SI scholarships include India, and the 12-month post-study permit bridges into work. Family permits let spouses come along with full work rights — often the deciding factor.
What will actually surprise you
- Dual citizenship isn't on the menu
- Sweden allows it; India doesn't. Taking Swedish citizenship (now after 8 years) means surrendering the Indian passport for OCI status — a genuine long-term decision worth making consciously, not by default.
- The quiet will be loud at first
- After Indian metros, Swedish streets feel switched off: no horns, queues by ticket number, neighbors you may not meet for a year. It reads as cold; it's actually privacy as a love language. Clubs, sports and kollegor at fika are the doors in.
- Your kitchen survives the move
- Every major city runs Indian grocery stores (and Stockholm several), with fresh curry leaves, atta and decent paneer. What's expensive: eating out. What's revelatory: Swedish dairy and summer produce.
- Winter is a gear problem, not a courage problem
- Minus ten is fine in the right layers — wool base, real boots, a proper parka — and houses are warmer inside than most Indian winters ever allowed. Budget 5,000–8,000 SEK for the kit and buy it here, in autumn sales.
Money, quickly
1 SEK ≈ ₹9.2 (mid-2026, indicative) — a 45,000 SEK salary is ≈ ₹4.1 lakh/month gross. Remittances: Sweden sits outside UPI but Wise and Remitly move SEK→INR at low spreads; the bank's own international transfer is the expensive default to avoid.
Driving
An Indian license is valid for one year after registration — then Swedish tests from scratch (no exchange). Many skip the car entirely: transit covers the cities, and the license project can wait for year two.
Taxes across the border
The India–Sweden tax treaty prevents double taxation; once resident, worldwide income is declared here with credits for Indian tax. NRE/NRO account rules change with your residency status — notify your Indian bank, and note that Indian investment income becomes Swedish-taxable.
Common questions
How can an Indian citizen move to Sweden?
Three main doors: a work permit on a Swedish job offer of at least 33,390 SEK/month (from June 2026) — often via the IT corridor or intra-company transfer; a master's or PhD program with the 12-month post-study job-seek permit after; or family ties to someone already resident.
Can my spouse work in Sweden on a dependent permit?
Yes — family members of work permit holders receive full, unrestricted work rights from day one. No separate sponsorship, no occupation limits. For dual-career families this is one of Sweden's strongest cards.
Does India allow dual citizenship with Sweden?
No. Sweden permits dual citizenship, but India requires renouncing Indian citizenship upon naturalizing elsewhere; OCI status preserves most practical ties. With Sweden's residence requirement now at 8 years, there's ample time to weigh it.
